Miyazaki: The Last Food Bender

By | September 8th, 2017|

Taste, Size, Quality, and Price.

Long ago the four elements lived in harmony. Then everything changed when cheap restaurants attacked the food scene. Only Miyazaki, master of all four elements could stop them. And when the world needed him the most, he opened a branch in Molito.

Miyazaki maintains the essential balance between depth and flavor using delicate cuts that could silence any yearning tongue.

Miyazaki’s Executive Chef, Konichi Kondo, knew the cheap plague that struck the city was due to intense competition. With every restaurant lowering their prices by using budget ingredients, he dared to do the unthinkable: wage war with premium quality ingredients at higher costs.

This philosophy especially applies to their food gems which are also the center piece of every Japanese cuisine: SUSHI. Unlike the Americanized jumbo slices that barely fit in your mouth, Miyazaki maintains the essential balance between depth and flavor using delicate cuts that could silence any yearning tongue. Their Chirashi Sushi Jo also stands at the summit of first-class dishes. And while it may cost you your month’s salary, it’s a petty price to pay for a taste of the gourmet elite.

Their delicious delicacies are sure to entice, not just your eyes, but even your tongue and tummy.

Worry not, if your wealth is plenty in health but not in silver. A true master of the four elements understands that size doesn’t have to come at the expense of your paycheck. Their Pork Curry guarantees quantities sufficient to feed either an entire family or a voracious eater with insatiable hunger. Whichever side you lie with, your allegiance to good taste will not be compromised.

For men seeking unusual tastes of eruptive raptures, their Bukkake Udon will explode in your mouth and leave you feeling exhausted with satisfaction. Not many may dare to partake in such pleasures but their other delicious delicacies are also sure to entice, not just your eyes, but even your tongue and tummy.

At the end of the meal, there can only be one place for your senses to find peace and harmony. Like an avatar protecting the taste and quality of Japanese cuisine, rest assured Miyazaki will be there fighting the food war to give you more while others try to offer you less.

The Breakdown
Chirashi Sushi Jo

Legend has it the sushi comes from the summit of an icy food mountain that preserves all the jeweled flavors of Japan. If you’re willing to pay the price to climb to the top, you’ll be rewarded with more than just a breathtaking view of Japan’s finest.

Pork Curry

For those seeking to balance their wage and expenses, the Pork Curry is there to tip the scales in your favor. The serving size is more generous than the ones funding your payroll. And the satisfaction you get after the meal will erase any remorse you might have from lightening your wallet.

Nihonkai Tsukiji: Fresh, Fast, and Furious

By | September 6th, 2017|

Located right at Tuscany’s doorstep, Nihonkai is noted for their fresh sashimi and terrific price-to-quality ratio. The food – along with the atmosphere – makes the restaurant a memorable experience. Lots of sashimi, rolls, and combination plates for lunch and dinner further expand their arsenal to slay that Japanese craving within. The price isn’t bad either. Especially for the quality they slam on the table, it’s a damn good trade.

Grab any of their raw dishes and eat the night away for almost half the price you’d originally pay in a high-end Japanese restaurant.

I highly recommend their Chirashi Don which features a whole lineup of ika, uni, white fish, mackerel, salmon, tuna, crabsticks, and tamago. On my first bite, the size, flavor and quality of this P495 dish made me feel like I robbed them out of their business. Also, the salmon always tasted like grade A+ wagyu in my past 50 or more visits. Look no further for your next Japanese lunch or dinner. Grab any of their dishes and eat the night away for almost half the price you’d originally pay in a high-end Japanese restaurant.

The staff are like family. They never leave your side and make sure each dish is served with more love and care than your mom and dad ever had for you.

And if you were like me back in the early days of Japanese eating, go for their good ole Katsu Curry with golden crispy pork cutlet smothered in curry over a bed of good quality rice. This meal is perfect for when you’re dining with a specific budget in mind, and they won’t fail you. The staff are like family. They never leave your side and make sure each dish is served with more love and care than your mom and dad ever had for you. So when the day comes that the whole world hates you, don’t forget, Nihonkai will always be there to soothe your lonely battered childhood away.

I said SOOTHE not FIX.

The Breakdown
Chirashi Don

The golden hand of Nihonkai. Scattered pieces of incredibly fresh sashimi over a bed of quality sushi rice. Legend says enough consumption of this dish will turn you into a full-blown mermaid.

Spicy Tuna Sashimi
It’s simple, fresh, and one of their most popular appetizers. A great starter that will complement almost every main dish. It’s like buying a condom. It’s also mildly spicy, fatty, and balanced out by the tuna’s lean meat.
Shrimp Tempura
Their tempura was okay, which is why I didn’t talk about it that much. It was awesome before but recently, their batter became a bit too thick for my taste.
Uni Tempura
Now this is different from your usual Shrimp Tempura. The pieces are overloaded with fresh uni and how they did the batter in this one was perfect. There were bits of hot uni oozing out as I grabbed a piece. And before I knew it, all I could say was “What? Done already!?”
Katsu Curry
I like curry. They have it here. I can have a lot of it. It is good. The pork is good. The rice is good. Simple is good. Period.

Summary

Whether you’re looking for raw or cooked dishes, Nihonkai offers both of these at an awesome price and quality. The space itself is slender and cozy with a small traditional bar area, dark brown furnished chairs, and a spread of Japanese accents. A must-order would be their Chirashi Don and Spicy Tuna Sashimi which is enough to make you want to change your career into a Japanese fisherman.

The Belle & Dragon: Your Friendly Dragon

By | April 10th, 2017|

Are you stressed and looking for a place to unwind or wash your worries away? Belle and Dragon is the place to be. It’s one of the most laid back places I’ve ever been to and the price is just right for the quality and creativity each dish brings to the table. On our first visit we had the pork buns, nachos, smores, jerk chicken, and chicken wings. They were all great but the nachos really stood out. Imagine your favorite nachos replaced with crispy deep-fried wanton chips smothered in cheese, sauce, and fatty ground meat. That’s not great, that’s awesome – just like their jerk chicken and wings.

“The sauce that came with it felt like a punch in the face, but one full of love.”

I’m not a fan of grilled chicken, but theirs tasted like it was basted in fat, which is a good thing since grilled dishes tend to dry themselves out. The sauce that came with it felt like a punch in the face, but one full of love – the kind you’ll want to get hit with over and over again. Even their chicken wings were one of the best I’ve ever had as it was coated in a light thin crispy batter, which went perfectly well with its second coating of glorious sweet sauce. This solved the common problem of the sauce dripping off like in other restaurants who make these so-called buffalo wings.

“The wings’ cream cheese which is on a whole different level of umami.”

Another highlight isn’t a dish but the wings’ cream cheese which is on a whole different level of umami. It made me give a victory scream for chicken and cream cheese. And though the price for some of the dishes may be a bit too expensive for some, their drinks are fairly priced. While dining, throw in a beer and you’ll never look at food the same way again. At the end of the meal, the nachos, jerk chicken, and wings with cream cheese were the highlights of the night. When I revisit, I’ll definitely get these dishes again – they’re just that damn good!

The Breakdown
Pork Buns
The meat was tender and lean. The buns were fluffy and sweet. And the sauce was there to marry all these flavors together, creating a nice simple umami-filled bite.
Chicken Wings
Most likely the best wings I’ve ever had. The sweet sauce coated in sesame seeds went great with cream cheese which tasted like it was foraged from ten different types of herbs. It was a successful marriage of flavors.
Shepherd’s Pie
Rich creamy rustic mashed potatoes on top of nicely seasoned ground beef. A classic dish that tasted like it was made back in the 1800’s. It’s comforting and addicting. The only way to understand it is to have one yourself.
Nachos
The chef’s ingenuity comes into play when you get this. They replaced the corn chips with deep-fried wanton and it was amazing. This was good for three to four average people, but only good for one not-so-average person.

By | November 11th, 2016|

Sometimes you’ve got to love Bonifacio High Street and Serendra for their outdoor strip concept. It’s nice to have a leisure walk when the weather is cooperating but most of the time you’ll probably have to stroll around while enduring Manila’s popular scorching heat or dodging the rain.

If there’s a positive though out of this, it is that there are plenty of choices when it comes to food. If you’re looking for a place to have a full meal or just grab some desserts, we’ve listed down 10 of the BEST places to eat in High Street and Serendra RIGHT NOW.

10. Sentro 1771
Sentro has been around for ages for a good reason: they have some of the tastiest Filipino choices you can have in BGC. The overall atmosphere is pretty chic without being intimidating. Their Corned Beef Sinigang will always be a bestseller here and is a definite must-order.

Bucky’s Poblacion: Just Way Too Good

By | November 1st, 2016|

Since we launched the website we’ve always asked ourselves whether we would recommend the place we’re reviewing to our friends; if we’d come back; and, more importantly, if the food was delicious. As time passed by, we made our fair share of friends and enemies in the Manila food scene. Not everyone can handle our straightforward, easy-to-read, no-nonsense, full-frontal, don’t-give-a-f*ck-what-you-think writing style. Besides, this is what Manila needs right now. An increasing rise of so-called “foodies” and “restaurant insiders” have been infecting the web with sponsored biased reviews for way too long. But you know what else Manila needs right now? Some good ole classic, well-done, simple and straight to the point, this-is-how-you-open-a-restaurant, delicious ass whooping that Bucky’s surprisingly provides.

Bucky’s is popularly known for their “not-a-brownie-brownies”. It’s a decadent chocolate flavor bomb that whacks at you with a chocolate sledgehammer over and over again, combined with a barrage of intense fudgy goodness that can only be described if you’ve tried it already. Also, if you loved the chocolate ambrosia you’ve been having from Bucky’s these past few years then get ready for a rollercoaster ride, as this humble restaurant is a completely different goliath.

“Bucky’s hands down serve THE BEST FRIED CHICKEN IN MANILA.”

They kept the menu simple with a select number of well thought out dishes. Looking for some classic fried chicken? Well lucky you, as Bucky’s hands down serve THE BEST FRIED CHICKEN IN MANILA. The bursting crispy skin with its ultra flaky batter combined with the juicy thigh meat makes those “What would your last meal” questions look like nonsense.

“They have a select liquor selection as well in case you need to settle the score with some internal food trauma that’s locked away in your subconscious.”

Their other dishes such as the Baked Ziti and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich are like grand fireworks of retribution to make up for all those times you stuffed dirt down your mouth. Their soft serve gives drug addicts a new addiction to replace shabu and marijuana. No other cup of frozen vanilla even comes close. Their amazing toppings are so good that we pretty much concluded this is what the after-life must taste like. They have a select liquor selection as well in case you need to settle the score with some internal food trauma that’s locked away in your subconscious.

If you’re looking for some simple, honest to goodness, well-executed and of course delicious bomb ass food, Bucky’s is the only solution to your problem. If there was a must visit eatery you should go to right now, Bucky’s would be it.

The Breakdown
Fried Chicken
Imagine an explosion of chicken fat all over you mouth, combined with a tender and flavourful thigh meat. Now multiply it’s delicious level tenfolds.
Baked Ziti with Ragu
Not for the faint of heart. The burnt edges of the ziti added that smokey flavour and combined with loads of cheese, ragu and sauce then you got a champion of a dish.
Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Tomato Soup
A rich molten cheese sandwiched between two equally delicious brioches and combined with the tarty but sweet tomato soup makes this some of the best grilled cheese sandwiches we’ve ever had.
Soft Serve
The hint of saltiness in the soft serve made this all the more addicting. The vanilla was very subtle and the brown butter polvoron topping was super delicious as well.

Chef Jessie: Timeless French Goodness

By | October 26th, 2016|

Chef Jessie has been cooking up some of the best classic French dishes for a long while now. Just like a classic 1963 Corvette, she never loses her style and blazes past almost all the other restaurants, leaving them in the dust.

“A feeling of stiffness is also very apparent but after a couple glasses of wine and some amazing soufflés, you’ll hardly be reminded that you’re inside a tablecloth-setting restaurant.”

The place in general has a very simple and relaxing atmosphere about it. A feeling of stiffness is also very apparent but after a couple glasses of wine and some amazing soufflés, you’ll hardly be reminded that you’re inside a tablecloth-setting restaurant. Also, the service has always been impeccable. The waiters take your order, jam it inside their head, and then quickly deliver your orders to the kitchen. The kitchen, just like their waiters, is very efficient and consistent with the execution of their dishes.

“She keeps it simple and very down-to-earth but we love it as her flavors will slice you up with a majestic battle axe made out of butter, cream and fat… over and over again.”

We love consuming some of her ridiculously rich soufflés, pasta, and don’t even get me started with their Sea Bass dish. She keeps it simple and very down-to-earth but we love it as her flavors will slice you up with a majestic battle axe made out of butter, cream and fat… over and over again.

It is heavily recommended to reserve if you’re planning to dine here as the place may get packed due to a hefty load of events and parties. While she may not be the hottest restaurant in town, Chef Jessie proves that well-made classic dishes just like her restaurant will always be timeless.

The Breakdown
Beef Carpaccio
The beef tasted very clean with zero hints of metallic flavour. This was perfectly paired with their house bread, a must order.
Steak Tartar
The manlier version of the Beef Carpaccio is the Steak Tartar. If the Beef Carpaccio wasn’t enough for you, then this will surely seal the deal.
Baked Chilean Sea bass in Miso
Probably up there with some of the best Sea bass dishes in Manila. The sweetness of the miso went really well with the tremendously moist Sea Bass. I’d chow on this every day if I could.
Chocolate Souffle
The Chocolate Souffle was tremendously fluffy and rich. If there was chocolate heaven this would be it.

Moe’s Southwestern Grill: Don’t Wanna Taco ‘Bout it

By | October 24th, 2016|

I love Mexican food but not if it’s served with a bowl of decomposed left-overs. They claim you can build your own burrito, but isn’t it SUPPOSED to be that way? I also hate the way they overcharge for extra toppings. Who in their right mind would even count the number of toppings on a burrito? I’d rather be forced to spend MORE for an enjoyable meal rather than being served “food” that barely comes close to being called mediocre. If they wanted to serve DECENT Mexican food, the least they could’ve done was use better ingredients and not skimp on them. No one likes to have beef that’s as big as tiny droplets for lunch.

“The beans and beef looked and tasted like little droppings, the cheese looked like aged fungus and, when they’re all mixed-up, they ended up becoming one huge bowl of a nuclear disaster that’s not even ingestible – much less appetizing.”

The place was riddled with flies and the food’s quality was nowhere near fresh. The lettuce was the only thing that actually looked like lettuce. The beans and beef looked and tasted like little droppings, the cheese looked like aged fungus and, when they’re all mixed-up, they ended up becoming one huge bowl of a nuclear disaster that’s not even ingestible – much less appetizing. The salsa containers were so small it was literally built to house less than a tablespoon of whatever diluted sauce they wanted in there.

The Breakdown
Ground Beef Burrito
It’s literally called a ground beef burrito because the beef looks like small rounded bits of soil from the ground. The overall size was decent, but generally just not worth your time and money.
Steak Nachos
Diluted cheese, little bits of beef steak (which they have the audacity to charge +P60 more compared to the chicken), and black beans that looked like little droppings. These made the dish another complete waste of money.

Guide: 10 Best Restaurants in Greenbelt Right Now

By | October 21st, 2016|

Ahhh~ Greenbelt, the land of luxury watches, branded clothes and, most importantly, an abundant variety of restaurants to choose from. The places you can choose from haven’t really changed much these past few years except for a notable few. So, if you’re looking for the tastiest options you can have in Greenbelt, here are 10 of the best restaurants located inside Greenbelt right now. Starting off with Number 1…

1. Lusso
Margarita Fores isn’t just titled the best female chef in Asia just because of her Cibo restaurants and contribution to the food scene in the Philippines. She’s also known for her amazing food in Lusso. We like to think of Lusso as her think tank laboratory. Plenty of the dishes here are amazingly delicious and it’s difficult to find any other French restaurant around Greenbelt as good as Lusso. Lusso without a doubt is the best restaurant you can find in Greenbelt when it comes to service and of course its absurd levels of deliciousness.
